The Smear Campaign On Monday, January 29, The Pasadena Star News published a hoax letter smearing me. The purported author does not exist, the return address gives a street address that does not exist, and the letter is a complete lie. It falsely accused me of misconduct during a contested petition drive to have my neighborhood become a landmark district. I was one of the leaders of that successful effort to preserve the character of our area. The leader of the opposition saw the letter and recognized it as a hoax. He had the decency to immediately contact the newspaper with the truth. His letter in support of my character was published and he is now working to help get me elected! On Thursday, February 1, The Pasadena Weekly published a fair story on the fraudulent letter, which they had also received but didn't print. Read the Weekly story here. On Friday February 2, the Star News published a "Correction." It simply stated that they should not have published the letter because it came from a non-existent address and the author could not be verified. In the "correction" they misspelled my name as "Lamako" rather than "Lomako." So if anyone googled me they saw the smear letter and not the correction. The Star News removed the smear letter from the paper's web site after they were informed of the problem. That seems to have taken it out of google searches. Similar letters with other phony signatures have appeared in other papers, but they are low circulation ad based freebies so are not much of a problem. The Weekly asked me who I thought was responsible for the smear. Here's what I said: "I'm the only person in this election who is talking about enforcing the voter mandate to control growth. The people who don't want that to happen will do anything to stop me. This smear is an attempt to to make the election about me rather than the failure of the city to get growth under control." PLEASE HELP. The only way we can be sure that voters are told the true story about this election is by mail. That costs money. Please click on the "Donate" button on the left to contribute. Whatever you can afford is fine, $5.00, $10.00, $25.00, or more. Thank you.
