"If you share my concern that
Pasadena has gotten off track, that we need to get development under
control, that we need to reaffirm our commitment to preserving our
historical heritage, that we need to use our success to help our
schools and the less fortunate members of our community — then vote
for me. I’ll take our message to city hall and we will get Pasadena
back on track."
Bungalow Heaven Speech
January 25, 2007
Thank You!
"Despite the all the hard and smart
work put in by supporters, we were unable to overcome the well
funded opposition from the status quo elite. My opponent, with the
help of some anonymous allies, waged one of the dirtiest and most
dishonest Pasadena City Council races in living memory.
I am deeply grateful to everyone
who helped in this campaign. I did not imagine that so many
people would do so much to help me. I am so disappointed that I
could not have done more to help them realize their aspirations for
a more honest, more humane, local government that was not tied to
outside economic and political interests.
Although we did not win the
election, we did succeed in showing that the city’s failure to
control growth and failure to adequately protect our historical
heritage are problems that District 2 residents
demand be fixed. My opponent got the message - at least to the point
that she began mimicking my positions. We must watch to see that she
keeps her promises. I think that the city
council as a whole understands that they must do a better job.
I will continue to be involved in
the community. Nevertheless, I will have more free time than I have
had for years. I look forward to fixing up my house, spending more
time with friends and family, and getting back into sailing.
Thank you so much for all your
help." Jim Lomako

Margaret McAustin
Slings More Mud
Continuing her attempt to shift
voters' attention away from the real issues,
my opponent has sent
out another mudslinging hit piece. She apparently hopes that voters
will not realize that this election is not about my back yard, but
it is about what her developer friends are doing to Pasadena's
front yard, with her help. Her hit team dug up a minor "disturbing the
peace" violation that happened 18 years ago. One District 2
resident has already posted his reaction on line:
"A nasty little piece of campaign
trash arrived in my mailbox yesterday... When you have the
qualifications, emphasize the qualifications. When you have
integrity, emphasize the integrity. When you have neither, trash
your opponent." Read the whole
letter.
Margaret again tried to
hide her professional and personal connections to developers and
called me dishonest for stating what she has stated under penalty of
perjury. In an Article in the Pasadena Weekly she even claimed
"I'm not an owner, not a developer of any real estate project,
nor have I accepted a penny from any of those people.”
Actually, she has taken at least one
million pennies ($10,000.00) from developers according to a
financial disclosure statement she filed
with the city. She has also accepted thousands of dollars of
campaign contributions from developers and their lawyers and
associates. Click on the highlighted text to link to the original
sources.
Google "McAustin big builder" and see what you
find. Or look in the yellow pages, going back several years, and you
will find her listed under "Real Estate Consultants."
Margaret's piece claims that I have
some explaining to do. I did that in an article in the Pasadena
Weekly, which quoted me:
"I have always stood up for my own
rights and for the rights of others. I am ready to fight for the
residents of Pasadena to get growth under control and to protect the
character of our city," said Lomako. "We have already seen
that leaders who value docile affability over defending our city are
no match for the developers and others who are exploiting Pasadena
at our expense."

Lomako Moves into
Runoff Election to be held April 17
Jim Lomako placed second in the March
6 Pasadena City Council election behind Margaret McAustin, and ahead
of Stacy Lewis. Since no one received more than half the votes, the
two top finishers, Lomako and McAustin will face each other in a
runoff election on April 17. McAustin went negative late in the
campaign with false charges against both Lomako and Lewis. McAustin
also broke the the Pasadena Fair Campaign Practices Agreement which
all three candidates signed.

Jim
"It appears Lomako is a little too
outspoken in his views about slowing down growth, which rubs people
the wrong way sometimes. To that we say, 'It's about time.'"

Lomako Calls for a Building Moratorium
On Monday, February
26, Jim Lomako delivered a letter to the City Council calling for a
moratorium on residential projects in the Central District of
Pasadena and appeared before the City Council. We are very close to
reaching the growth limit for residential units in the central
District. If we act promptly, we can better
guide the development of the units that are in the pipeline or have
not been allocated. If
there is a rush to build projects before
the residential limit is reached, Pasadena could be left with a
legacy of ill-conceived buildings that would serve as a lasting
reminder of inadequate planning.

Star News Story on the
District 2 Candidates Forum
"Lomako, whose yard signs tout his
motto "Stop Irresponsible Growth," claimed "victory" Thursday,
saying his focus on overdevelopment in the city had brought the
issue to the forefront of the District 2 race.
"I am the only candidate who talks
about controlling growth in their ballot statement," said Lomako,
59. "Now all the candidates are talking about growth in Pasadena."
"Lomako, who served on
the city's Community Development Committee for more than six years,
said the combination of "carefully managed growth" and preservation
of history is the recipe for success."

Controlling Growth and
Congestion.
The amount of development in central Pasadena is inconsistent with
the growth limits that many of us worked very hard to enact. The
city has failed to follow the mandate of the voters. On the
city council I will take the lead to get Pasadena back on track and
enforce the growth limits. The over-development and growing
congestion must be controlled now.
Historic Preservation. We
have also gotten off track with historic preservation. The City
Council recently voted to allow the demolition of the Herkimer Arms,
the only apartment building designed by Greene and Greene - the
signature architects of Pasadena and world renowned master
architects of the Arts and Crafts movement. In the last year, city
agencies have allowed the first two demolitions of historic homes in
Pasadena's landmark districts. The conversion of the historic
Raymond Theater into condos is a serious loss that must not be
repeated. Jim is the only candidate truly committed to historic
preservation and has the record to prove it.

Improving Public Education.
We have made our neighborhoods healthier and safer. It’s time to
turn our attention to our schools so that all families can feel
comfortable sending their children to their neighborhood schools. I
will work with the community, PUSD, and my friends at the Pasadena
Educational Foundation to make quality education a reality for all
of our children.
Saving Open Spaces.
Our open spaces are threatened from the proposal to put storage
units on the Southern California Edison right of way in the east, to
the proposal to develop pristine Annandale Canyon in the west. I am
committed to saving our remaining natural spaces and expanding our
recreational space. Our state assembly member and the Santa Monica
Mountains Conservancy are working toward buying Annandale Canyon.
Pasadena should commit to paying part of the cost, if necessary,
before one of the nicest remaining urban wilderness areas in
Southern California becomes another high end residential fire trap.
Preserving Quality of Life for
Everyone. We can do much better at providing affordable
housing and finding a way to allow families to stay in their home
town. Our public service departments must look to the future. We are
headed for a global environmental catastrophe. Here in Pasadena we
own our own water and power providers and we have a unique
concentration of intellectual resources. We can become a world
leader in environmental sustainability.
